My name is David Greenberg and I would like to thank Dr. Ahmed and everyone else who worked so hard on this this project. I have long admired to Dr. Ahmed for his scholarly contributions to the study of Islam and I have appreciated his appeal for compassion to combat extremism and intolerance. However, it was not until last night that I discovered the challenges that Dr. Ahmed faced and the costs that he paid both for his scholarly pursuits and his embodiment of a moderate perspective.
With all the adventure of a Hollywood drama, Dr. Ahmed’s life on stage
was captivating. I left the event in awe of his accomplishments, sympathetic to his hardships, envious of his travels, and inspired by his message. It is hard to imagine that any one could have lived such a challenging, dynamic and eventful life and still maintain the passion and energy that Dr. Ahmed displays on stage and in person.
I feel that Dr. Ahmed’s story resonates with everyone, but it was especially fitting to have its debut at the beautiful Washington Hebrew Congregation. Dr. Ahmed repeatedly emphasized the importance of knowledge and education, values shared by both Jews and Muslims.
Hopefully this show and it’s profound and powerful message will be experienced by many people of varied backgrounds, it has so much to teach us all!
